The face-saver

Here are a few points to be kept in mind while buying cosmetics...

How often do you ponder over the quality of the cosmetics you buy? Do you give yourself up to be guided by the winds of temptation? Impossible, you would say.

Nevertheless, here are a few points to be kept in mind while buying cosmetics.

Must-buys: There are a few products that you should include in the monthly shopping list. According to beautician Laila Kakade, face wash, deodorants, moisturisers, face and body scrubs and clay packs are must-buys. Alpha Hydroxyl Acid (AHA), Vitamin E and Tea Tree oil are ideal for extra dry, mature or pimple-prone skin. You should be careful while choosing lipsticks, eyeliners and blushers. Also, a one-time investment in brush packs (for better application of blusher, eye shadow and lipstick) is advisable.

Mix `n' match: Many skin care and colour cosmetic concerns offer sampling counters at the multi-brand outlets. So you can try out and choose your compact, eye shadow and mascara from these counters. Contrary to the belief that you should stick to one product range, you can very well mix and match till you are able to choose your mix of brands. For instance, you can opt for a foundation from one brand and a translucent or loose powder from the other.

But when it comes to hair care products, it is essential to stick to one brand of shampoo and conditioner. "But check the condition of your hair before you buy the refill; consult your beautician or analyse it yourself," says Laila.

Product changes: The condition of your hair and skin tends to change due to different factors. Exam stress can result in the skin breaking into pimples, while change of weather can make the hair go oily or dry. There is no quick-fix solution in beauty care. "Always give a product a week's time to register its effect. Don't discard the product after using it once," says Laila.

The discounts available at the counters can be enticing, but don't go for the products at the cost of your skin and hair.

Make sure you buy the right cosmetics for the skin and hair the next time you shop.
