C.I.D. Moosa enters comic book
DILEEP IS riding an unprecedented wave of success. The actor, producer, distributor has now taken on a new role, the lead cartoon character in a comic book, named after his blockbuster film `C.I.D. Moosa.'
Toms, the cartoonist who set a trend in Malayalam comic strips with his immortal Bobban and Molly series, has introduced Dileep in this new avatar in the 82nd issue of his popular Toms Chitrakatha.
The cartoonist confessed that the main character was modelled exactly on the actor, however, despite close resemblances, the other characters in the comic book were not really inspired by the various stars in the film.
There are many firsts to the book's credit. It is for the first time that a Malayalam movie star is being used as a cartoon character and the first time that a character from a Malayalam film is being transformed into a character in a comic strip. Moreover, this is Toms' first detective comic story.
The book titled `Moosa Thamasa Kathakal,' features two adventure stories of C.I.D. Moosa. Both the stories are totally different from the film track, but do have scenes that replicate those of the film.
Dileep is obviously thrilled to be featured as a Toms character. "I consider it an honour to be featured as a cartoon character by Toms, who has created such popular characters like Bobban and Molly. It is also an recognition for the film C.I.D. Moosa as it is the film that really inspired him to sketch such a comic book," the actor says.
Toms, who has already got comics on Bobban and Molly, Mandoos and,Unnikuttan, in the market, however, says that he is not planning to make a series of the C.I.D. Moosa stories. "I might publish one or two more books of the C.I.D. Moosa Chitrakatha. May be till the film continues to run in the theatres. But to be pursued as a series, well, the story might become stale after a while.''
The enthusiasm of the children for the film was what prompted Toms to see the film. "After watching the film I thought that the theme was fit for such an adaptation. Those who like the film will definitely like the comics too," feels Toms.
According to him, though this new comic book is still in its distribution stage, the initial response has been very good. Now, that the idea of introducing a cartoon character from a movie has been realised, Toms says that in the future he might consider turning other popular movies into similar comics. "If the story is fit for such a transformation, then, I find no reason why we cannot do such a thing. But the movie has to be popular, only then the people, especially the children would be interested in reading the comics,'' he says.
So, don't be surprised if you may soon come across the comic caricatures of some of Malayalam's popular stars.
