The patriot

TRADITIONALLY IN the Tamil film industry, Independence Day (August 15) is considered auspicious to release films with a patriotic fervour. This year, "Thennavan", Vijaykanth's home production directed by debutant Nandakumaran, is the lone big release. The actor has realised that his action-hero and do-gooder image alone is not enough to bring in the crowds.

So he has tried to re-invent himself in a different role that will have some touches of reality within the formula framework. Last year, when he played a vigilant professor in "Ramana", it was appreciated and the film did reasonably well at the box-office. In "Thennavan", he plays a state election officer who cleans up the system and brings in people-friendly electoral reforms. The film has the ingredients of a mass movie — glamorous Kiran, well choreographed action scenes, Yuvan Shankar Raja's music and Vivek's comedy track.
