Rhythm of the rain

DAKSHINACHITRA celebrates the onset of the monsoon with the Ayyanar and Adiperukku festivals from July 18 to 27. Adiperukku is a unique South Indian festival that is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Adi to pay tribute to water's life-sustaining properties. A rainwater-harvesting model will be on display at DakshinaChitra during the 10 days and Shekar Raghavan of the Rain Centre will explain the need for water harvesting, between 10 a.m. and noon everyday.

The Ayyanar festival will be marked by 20-minute therukoothu performances by the Chetput Shanmugam troupe every morning and afternoon. A procession, accompanied by devarattam dancers, therukoothu artistes and children, will be taken out from DakshinaChitra to the Ayyanar shrine on July 20. Terracotta figurines will be offered to the deity at the end of the procession.

Children visiting DakshinaChitra during the 10 days can learn to make small clay figurines. As the festival coincides with the Children's Mela, there will be puppet shows, magic shows and bullock cart rides for kids.

Paintings by children taking part in the DakshinaChitra's art competition on the theme of water conservation will also be on display. The winners will be announced on July 26.

Career camp

Meanwhile, if you are interested in a career in architecture and design, DakshinaChitra is organising a two-day residential seminar for students of Standards X, XI and XII on July 19 and 20. The seminar will be conducted by leading professionals such as Benny Kuriakose, Ranjan Nambiar and Christina Nambiar.

The seminar will include lectures and demonstrations, assignments to study one of the regions of the South represented at DakshinaChitra, live-in experience at one of the traditional houses there, feedback and discussion. The best student will be given a prize. For details, call 24462435 or 56114981 or 954114272603.
