Shelter for homeless animals

Baba Animal Welfare Shelter in Thiruninravur is a haven for stray dogs and cats. A brief profile.

IN HIS nondescript house in Thiruninravur, J. Adhikesavan maintains a shelter for pie dogs and cats. It is called Shri Baba Animal Welfare Shelter.

"I have been running this shelter for 16 years on my own steam. Now the shelter has been registered as a society," says Adhikesavan.

He takes stray dogs under his wings. Presently, there are over 20 dogs and about 10 cats at the shelter. "Not very long ago, the shelter was housing 36 dogs. Some of the dogs have been given in adoption to the Blue Cross of India."

Adikesavan is an ex-serviceman. "I put in my papers because I thought I would be answering my life's calling if I dedicated all my time to the upkeep of helpless animals. If I had continued working for the Indian Air Force, I would be retiring only in 2017. Though I am willing to take in more and more animals, paucity of funds has tied my hands. Now, I regret the decision to quit IAF. I could have been doing this service even while working," says Adikesavan ruefully. He says because of constant contact with these animals, he has developed a skin disease.

Shri Baba Animal Welfare Shelter is located at No. 9, 12th Cross, Prakash Nagar, Thiruninravur.
