COOL-TEXTURED khadi is the prime attraction at the Khadi and Village Industries Commission's (KVIC) Exhibition being held at Sri Sankara Hall, 267, TTK Road, Alwarpet. On display are khadi mull from West Bengal, Ponduru saris, men's kurtas, salwar kurta sets, bedsheets and towels all come at a hefty rebate. The kurtas in pastel hues and checks are good value for money.
The KVIC exhibition-cum-sale has a few surprises in the form of shell products. Handcrafted by Fazluddin, the all-shell floral bouquets and mirror frames are attractive. A touch of innovation can be seen in the handcrafted Mysore rosewood tables and corner tables, which are available in unusual shapes. The inlay work is brilliant. There are also rosewood chairs to suit contemporary tastes. Also look out for the well-carved mangowood panels, birds and animals from Mysore. The painting on the mangowood artefacts has been done by craftspersons from Tamil Nadu.
The walnut furniture from Kashmir compels attention. The exhibition also showcases handcrafted Shantiniketan leather bags, brass puja items from Varanasi, auspicious gems and malas.
The KVIC exhibition, which is being held as part of the Kamaraj Centenary celebrations, concludes on July 16.
