In rich hues

POPPY RED, tropical orange, gold and turquoise... a palette of warm hues combined with traditional weaves from West Bengal such as jaamdani, tangail, balucheri and dhakai beckon attention at Rang Mahal, a conglomeration of weavers from Nadia district, West Bengal. The proceeds of the rang Mahal sale will go directly to the weavers.

The exhibition showcases saris and yardage, which represents a languishing craft tradition. Finely spun mulls with typical motifs, and butties and naaksha borders are translated into cool and elegant saris and textiles. Classic dhakais and tangails in pastel shades with typical motifs and buttis stand out for their beauty. Some have jaamdani weaves to add a dash of elegance. As for the prices, one can pick up a bright tangail sari for less than Rs. 350 or a dhakai silk with jaamdani borders at rs. 2,000.

The salwar kurta ensembles, dupatta yardage and dress materials with jaamdani motifs as well as bandhej, phulkari and Sanghneri block prints offer variety.

One can pick up a `bootidaar' tangail in jewel tones, a classic `naakshi' bordered one or saris with temple borders, ikkat motifs and phulkari embossed finish. The colours are enchanting and run a gamut from powder blue and tulip yellow to poppy red and aquamarine blue. There's plenty for those looking for simple daily wear saris, with occasional embroidery and appliqué work. The salwar kurta ensembles with floral prints, sangneri, Santiniketan and Mughal motifs make perfect college and evening wear. Jaamdani woven dress materials with broad borders and eye-catching dupattas strike a balance between the traditional and the modern.

Rang Mahal's exhibition of West Bengal saris and fabrics is on at C.P. Arts Centre, 1, Eldams Road, Alwarpet, till July 14.
