SOUTH ZONE

Where quality is the watchword

The many well-established educational institutions in South Chennai add to its status as the cultural centre of the city.

SOUTH MADRAS has always been considered the cultural centre of the city. Apart from the beach, beautiful temples and numerous sabhas, cultural programmes and performances that take place here, the area is known for its many schools and colleges of repute. These educational institutions contribute to the area's status.

Residents of South Chennai need not head to the centre of the city for their higher education, as a variety of interesting courses is offered here. And the convenient distances mean that students can just walk across to college every morning, without worrying about catching a bus on time or finding an alternative mode of transport.

Apart from just the comfortable location, these colleges are among the oldest and best-respected institutions in the country. They offer good courses, quality teaching, state-of-the-art labs and other facilities and have medium to large sized campuses.

The colleges include the famous Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, Mylapore, that has a list of well-known alumni. The college's NCC unit is one of the best in the city and consistently wins laurels. This is one of the few colleges that conducts regular religion and philosophy classes for students. Courses include Economics, B. Com, Literature, Philosophy, Mathematics and more.

The YMCA College and the Government Arts College, Nandanam, are among the oldest in the city and offer unique courses.

The YMCA is the only college offering degrees in sports psychology and physical education, among other courses. The YMCA is also the venue for a number of events such as rock shows, sports meets and career fairs, apart from the usual academic activities.

The JBAS College for Women, formerly known as the SIET College for Women, is among the city's respected women's institutions. Well-qualified teaching staff, a good academic record, a choice of courses and a host of extra-curricular activities are the characteristics of this institution.

The SRM College of Arts and Science in Ramapuram, the Kumara Rani Meena Muthiah College for Women in Adyar, the Sanskrit College in Mylapore and the T.S.A. Narayanaswami Science College in Saidapet are other institutions in this area.
