Flaunting the kitchenwares

The Prestige Smart Kitchen stocks a wide range of kitchenware and aims to change the shopping culture

IN THE past, a kitchen used to be just a functional place without much thought given to aesthetics. A lot of hard work went into cooking food. Not any more. The modern-day cook has got everything at his/her disposal from pressure cookers to wet grinders to gas stoves and other cooking appliances making cooking easier and more pleasant.

Time was when a person would buy any utensil that caught one's fancy without bothering about how the kitchen shelves look. This habit resulted in vessels and kitchenware in all shapes, sizes and materials sitting ungainly on the shelves. However, in recent times, the shopping preferences of consumers have changed. Now, people prefer buying all products at one place. This concept has caught up with kitchenware as well. TTK Prestige's "Smart kitchen", inaugurated in the city a few days ago, is a `one-stop shop' for kitchen appliances. It has pressure cookers, knives, kitchen tools and all appliances required for cooking Indian food.

What prompted Prestige to have an exclusive outlet for kitchen appliances? "The consumer has become brand conscious and does not want to travel beyond a distance to buy kitchen appliances. Organised retailing has made headway in recent times," says S Ramachandran, Managing Director of TTK Prestige Limited.

Retailing is still a nascent industry and has no predetermined models. "We did a survey and found that there is a lot of untapped potential in the area of retailing kitchenware. We wanted to move beyond and build a larger relationship with the customer. So, we decided to start an exclusive outlet," avers Chandru Kalrao, Senior Vice President, Marketing.

Apart from appliances, the shop also offers customers a chance to join the Prestige Privilege Club, a loyalty programme, and Prestige Kitchen Care, which aims at providing service at the doorstep.

"We plan to open 20 such outlets in South India and 100 outlets all over India by the end of next year," he says. "The showroom and the concept will present the woman with ideas to upgrade her kitchen."
