In the big league
THE NEW Malayalee girl making waves in Chennai is Geetu Mohandas. She is Madhavan's heroine in Raj Kamal's "Nala Damayanthi" directed by Mouli. Those who saw a preview of the film are raving about her performance as Damayanthi, a Sri Lankan Tamil settled in Australia.
Geetu is no stranger to Tamil films, as she began her career as a child artiste in "Bommakuttiammavukku" and graduated to heroines' roles in Malayalam films such as "Life is Beautiful" and "Tenkasipattanam". But it was her performance as a Television reporter in the critically acclaimed "Sesham" that brought her to the notice of Kamalhassan, who later signed her up for "Nala Damayanthi".
Says Geetu: "I thoroughly enjoyed doing the film as it was a laugh riot even on the sets. Director Mouli gave me all the support along with Maddy. I am waiting to hear the audience response and if they accept me I will do more Tamil films".
The new Khan
THE MAN who is making waves in Bollywood these days is Irfan Khan after his riveting performance as a villain in director Tigmanshu Dhulia's "Haasil". The film takes a look at the politician-criminal nexus in a college campus. Irfan Khan's claim to fame was his performance in Asif Kapadia's "The Warrior" which got two international awards.
In "Haasil", Irfan plays Ran Vijay Singh who straddles the show like a colossus and has made an impact like Amjad Khan did in the role of Gabbar Singh in "Sholay".
Another shot in the arm for Irfan was when Hollywood major Miramax brought "The Warrior" for distribution in the U.S. as they felt that this "Asian actor has tremendous screen presence!" This Jaipur-based actor graduated from the National School Of Drama and is now flooded with offers from Bollywood `masala' directors as they feel this "villain" can bring in the crowds.
