Are cultural activities fast increasing in the city? Here is what the readers got to say.

THIS city is home to various ethnic groups and communities. But, do we have cultural activities?

The answer sadly, is a big "No". Such activities would help foster peace and amity among the people.

S S Ramakrishnan

Coimbatore

CULTURAL activities are needed, yes, but of primary importance is social awareness.

Efforts to preserve our depleting water bodies, improving the literacy rate and reducing poverty rates deserve more priority.

V. Renuka Devi

Coimbatore

COIMBATORE, a fast-growing business city has not concentrated much on cultural activities. Entertainment avenues have grown in recent years, but there is need to create awareness about our culture. Cultural activities bring people closer and also help in identifying hidden talents.

R. Suresh Kumar

Kamaraj Nagar

Ramanathapuram

CULTURAL activities in Coimbatore are few and far between. The limited number of sabhas, their inability to defray the heavy expenses and the absence of adequate number of well-equipped auditoria are the underlying causes for it.

Performing artistes prefer staying as enough opportunities are available there.

The elite of the city must chip in to further the cause of cultural activities.

K. D. Viswanaathan

Thadagam Road

BEING a theatre and performing arts enthusiast, it is disappointing to find that Coimbatore does not have much to offer to those of my mould.

These art forms should be introduced to everyone.

Varun C. Bhagath

Saibaba Colony

NORTH Indian and Kerala festivals have been well received for the past few years as the associations concerned make good use of the opportunities available. We are excited observing the cultural activities of others while ours remains a mere recollection.

D Lavanya

Velandipalayam

WHILE Chennai is vibrant with cultural activities and Madurai is known for its temples and related activities, Coimbatore seems to be too preoccupied with its cotton and textile trade.

For a city of its size and population, cultural activities are woefully inadequate.

It is high time Coimbatoreans took some time off from their busy business schedule and utilise it for meaningful cultural activities.

V.S. Krishnan

Vadavalli

CULTURAL activities are fast increasing in the city and it is particularly more at the college level especially during the end of the academic year.

Though college students excel in creative thinking and do well in cultural shows, their talents are masked by the presence of cine artistes who are the chief guests in such events in most of the private colleges.

Dr. M. Ramaswamy

Professor of Zoology,

Government Arts College

THE number of cultural events in Coimbatore is more than adequate at the moment. The colleges in host cultural shows frequently, which help in nurturing the creative talent.

Many cultural organisations also hold a large number of such shows.

K. N. Raj Kumar

Diplomats Inc.

Peelamedu

AT present, cultural activities are adequate, but in many instances cooperation is lacking. Sabhas, cultural organisations and academies require more support to promote their activities.

N.P.Shobana

Coimbatore

THE city has a number of cultural organisations. Most of them are State-based. However, one rarely comes across organisations seeking to promote Tamil culture.

There is also an urgent need to organise activities that bring the cultures of different States under one umbrella.

S S Imran Raja

New Thillai Nagar

NOT many music concerts or cultural programmes are available to the people in the city. The few that are organised go waste for want of publicity. It would be nice if philanthropists join hands to bring in more musicians and promote cultural activities in this city.

Ramanathan

Ramanathapuram

CINEMA theatres are the only source of entertainment for Coimbatoreans. Occasionally we get to listen to good Carnatic music thanks to some fine art societies. But they are not sufficient.

V V Subramanian

Naryanaswami Nagar

THE general perception is that cultural activities bring people together, but essentially, they divide the people of the world into groups and serve more as a psychological escape than to help man know about himself.

N Ramachundhiran

R S Puram

SABHAS conduct music concerts in the same "old town" areas.

For a change, they should organise more such programmes in remote areas so that people who have migrated from other States can sit together and enjoy some good music.

Anantha Lakshmi

Sreevatsa Gardens

WE need good entertainment to refresh our body and mind after a hard day's work.

At the moment, it is not adequate in the city.

More fine arts clubs and sabhas should be started to provide rich activities.

Music season may also be contemplated during December-January as in Chennai.

B Sripada Rajan

State Bank colony

CULTURAL activities are not adequate, but there is good potential, what with the city having enough industrialists, talented youngsters and people to sponsor good shows. There is also good scope to open new cultural organisations on the lines of the Music Academy, Raja Annamalai Mandram and Mylapore Academy.

T K S Mani

Thudiyalur

COIMBATORE can reach the cultural excellence of Chennai or Thanjavur unless it cures itself of the disease of aping alien cultures.

Even for college cultural fests, cine stars are invited as chief guests. This should be stopped.

Instead of spending huge amounts on outstation artistes, local talent must be encouraged.

R Karpagam

Ramnagar

DECADES ago, R K Shanumgam Chettiar declared Coimbatore as "financially forward and culturally backward".

The scenario has now changed for the better.

The city is brimming with cultural activities.

It is no more an idle centre but an ideal centre for activities.

Y V Visveswaran

Ramnagar

THE city has got adequate cultural activities. Television and media are playing a crucial role for their development.

But there is still room for improvement.

We are aping the West forgetting our traditional values and ethics. This attitude should change.
