ALWARPET: Monthly music programmes
THE GNANASKANDAN Trust celebrated the concept of "trinity" in the history of music compositions with a music programme at the Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall on April 20. Gnanaskandan, president of the trust, traced the chronological background of the compositions, and gave an exposition of this unique concept.
Beginning with the divine trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Siva and their consorts), the concept was further traced to the three worlds (Boolokam, Swargalokam and Yamalokam), and then to the body, mind and soul, and to further patterns of the three that are manifested in the physical world. This year, bearing the name Subhanu (three syllables), was ushered in by the trust with Thevarams of Appar, Sundarar and Gnanasambandar as well as songs composed by the Sirkazhi trinity, Muthuthandavar, Marimuthapillai and Arunachalakavi. This was followed by the kritis of Sri Thyagaraja, Syama Sastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar and their contemporaries. Beginning with Vinayaka and ending with Anjaneya Stuthi, the songs were sung by the disciples of Gnanaskandan.
The Gnanaskandan Trust conducts music programmes on every third Sunday of the month at the Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall, TTK Road, Alwarpet.
