T. NAGAR: Mathematics made easy

Genius Education and Learning Systems, a skill development organisation, has come up with education programmes that focus on personality development of children.

WHAT IS 22+39+28-24+6? Even as you begin to count on your fingers, six-year-old Ashish has come up with the answer — 71.

Ashish is no wonder kid, but he loves mental arithmetic ever since he was taught how to calculate using the Abacus programme. This programme, developed by the SIP Academy of Malaysia, claims to enhance the speed and accuracy of children, enabling them to think independently and confidently.

Says Dinesh Victor, one of the directors of Genius Education and Learning Systems (GELS), the official distributor of the programme in the country, "The abacus is a fun and interesting way to develop learning skills. It helps develop the child's concentration, creativity, numerical skills and visual memory and removes the fear of maths."GELS has launched three education programmes — GELS - Accelerated Mental Arithmetic Learning (AMAL), GELS-Kids English Programme (KEP) and GELS-Choice.GELS-AMAL is a junior programme on the abacus for kids in U.K.G. and class one. "The idea is to teach abacus methods at an early age when the brain is young and flexible," says Victor.

GELS-KEP is based on British norms and has been developed under multinational guidelines on communication, English language usage, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Says Vasanthi Ranganathan, director, GELS, "Communication is an essential tool for survival. Therefore, it is necessary for children to have the right tools to compete. The GELS-KEP programme will lay the foundation in language skills for children in their early years."

GELS-Choice is a career awareness programme that introduces students to the world of work and helps them in the process of career selection. The Choice programmes are for children aged five to 17, which covers classes one to 12.

Promoted by Ranganathan and a team of professionals with degrees from IIT, IIM, BIM and Symbiosis, GEL operates in all four southern states.

It has close to 60 learning centres with 100 certified instructors and has more than 3,000 child customers. For details contact GELS at 73 (old no. 24), Habbibullah Road, T. Nagar, Ph: 28230706/28230605.
