Losing hopes
AFTER KEEPING their fingers crossed for long, the people of the southern districts have started losing hopes of a delayed bounty from the skies. Against all expectations, the catchment areas of the Mullaperiyar dam have not received appreciable rainfall, with the south-west monsoon entering the second week of July after its onset on June 1. Now the people have thrown their hands heavenwards. Prayers for rain have started in all places of worship. `Varuna japam' has become a daily ritual. But the sky is yet to open up. If the gods do not answer the prayers, Madurai, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts are sure to face scarcity of water for drinking and irrigation purposes in the weeks to come. The ruling AIADMK men say, ``Wait till `Amma' comes''. Not in anticipation of announcement of measures to tackle water scarcity. But a belief that it would rain during her proposed visit to the southern districts during the third week of this month.
