Only grit matters

IT WAS an ecstatic feeling, indeed, for the students of academic excellence, who were honoured on the premises of the Indian Association for the Blind (IAB), at Sundararajanpatti near Madurai, last Saturday.

The only difference was that they could not register in their minds a visual impression of the festive environment around them, for they were visually disabled, who had created a mark in their SSLC and Plus-Two performance. Yet, for them, disability ceased to be a factor. It was only fitting that they were honoured for their determination during the celebration of Hellen Keller Day, by the IAB president, S.P. Gopalakrishnan, in the presence of S.M.A. Jinnah, secretaryTape recorders and cassettes were distributed to several other students by the Revenue Divisional Officer, Ananth Sayanam, and the Joint Director of Disabled Rehabilitation, E. Shanmugasundaram, gave away Braille materials and inaugurated a new recording unit on the premises.

Eventually, it turned out to be an occasion for the dignitaries to experience the joy of sharing. The Director of Aravind Eye Hosptial, P. Namperumalsamy, distributed Braille books for the students and the Personal Assistant to the Chief Educational Officer, Natarajan, distributed prizes. The Madurai Jogging Club presented music equipment to the IAB's orchestra.

V.V. Muthusamy, a doctor, A.M.T. Kanakarajan and S.S. Sivathaiah, rice mill owners, and N. Kathiresan, businessman, joined hands to help the needy students with cash assistance, clothes and rice.
