'Vegetable Cultivation`
A SESSION on "vegetable cultivation and marketing" was jointly organised by the Department of Agricultural Extension of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University at Alanthurai.
About 30 farmers, input dealers, officials from the State Department of Agricultural Scientists from TNAU participated.
Prof. Chandrakandan, former Director of Extension Education, spoke on the role of National Agricultural Technology project in farm technology.
He called upon farmers to express their problems in vegetable cultivation.
Prof. V. Alagesan, who chaired the discussion, invited issues like nursery preparation, fertiliser application, main field preparation, problems in vegetative phase, pest and disease incidence, fertiliser application and specified recommendations, after a thread bare interaction on the agronomic practices in vegetable cultivation.
S.Sridharan, associate professor, talked about the pest management aspects and elaborated on control measures with plausible reasons for a complete check on parts like usage of pesticides, erection on pheromone traps etc.
The ensuing session was chaired by K.Angappan.
He discussed the diseases that affected vegetables and shared information about disease incidence, various symptoms and the control measures with appropriate rationale.
Some of the other major issues that surfaced at the session are: Tomato varieties and hybrids suited to different seasons and seed availability, leaf curl viral disease control, chilly muranai-mite, brinjal fruit borer, onion thrips etc.
