A rare occasion

When the friends and students of M.P.Varghese celebrated the Golden jubilee of his involvement in public life and his 80th birth day a few days ago, it marked a rare occasion in the social history of Kerala.

Prof. Varghese was honoured with Acharya award for his eminence as a scholar and an untiring organiser. The public life of Mr. Varghese started in 1952 when he was elected to the State Assembly from Kothamangalam. The contribution of this man was never confined to the role of an educationist and a legislator. Mr. Varghese is still remembered by his students as an eminent teacher and a scholar. The book `Theory of Economic Potential and Growth' of Mr. Varghese was also widely acclaimed. Many green activists in Kochi remember the role he played in fighting the decision to set up a nuclear power plant at Bhoothankettu near Kothamangalam. It was under his leadership that the Organisation for protection against nuclear radiation was also formed.

Prof. Varghese was also instrumental in forming the Organisation for Promotion of Technical Education in Kerala and Organisation for Farmers for Establishment of Rights.
