Evergreen hero
THAT SLOW swagger still makes hearts pound as does the careless tilt of the head. Indian Cinema's evergreen hero Dev Anand has refused to grow old. And except for those who have been unlucky enough to watch one of his recently directed ventures, most cinemagoers in this part of the world are not really complaining.
Before Dev Anand, style was a word used sparingly to describe Bollywood heroes. But by the time the tall, dark and handsome man made his mark in the industry, he had made sure that the "good boy'' image was on its way out.
It was time for stylish hats, colourful scarves and loads of attitude thrown in. He taught people to `puff' those worries away the `stylish' way.
First seen in the film "Hum Ek Hain'' in 1946, it was his role in "Ziddi'' that first got him noticed. Guru Dutt's "Baazi'' followed in 1951, and with it limelight and stardom. The romantic hero image may have stuck on after the release of "Hum Dono'', "'Tere Ghar ke Saamne'' and "Jab Pyar Kissi se Hota Hai'' but his versatility as an actor was more than shown when he played the action and thriller role with finesse in films like "CID'' and "Kala Bazaar''.
For Dev Anand fans who are ever ready to catch up with his classic hits, Set Max is the Channel to stick to all this month. Celebrating the Dev Anand Festival, the channel will feature ten of the legendary actor's memorable flicks between July 15 and July 26.
Opening with "Hare Rama Hare Krishna'', the festival will air films like "Guide'', "Manpasand'', "Jaaneman'' and "Prem Pujari''. Also screened will be films like "Des Pardes'', "Jewel Thief'', "Swami Dada'' and "Heera Panna''. The films will be shown at 1 p.m. spread over two weeks.
