Gearing up to face competition
Picture this. A few years ago, India and China began their foray into the world apparel market together. But over the years China has left India way behind in the competition capturing 28 per cent of the market as compared to India's meagre two per cent. And the bottomline is that projections say China will acquire 50 per cent of the world market by 2005.
Concerned over India's slow growth in the global market, the Indian garment industry too is gearing up to face the competition and also make its mark. An effort in this series comes in the form of the prestigious "Garmentech International 2002'' -- the third edition of Asia's leading knitting and apparel technology exhibition.
This four-day exhibition, beginning at New Delhi's Pragati Maidan this Thursday (July 11), will be one of the biggest apparel technology events of the year wherein 300 companies from 30 countries will participate. The event will showcase a range of products from leading manufacturers of equipment related to apparel industry besides presenting technological developments in field.
Keeping in mind the huge size of the exhibition, separate halls of Pragati Maidan have been reserved for sewing, knitting, finishing and laundry, embroidery & CAD/CAM, fabrics & accessories and support services categories.
Efforts to make this exhibition successful began long back, a part of which was a series of strategic tie-ups with world's leading companies in different fields of garment manufacturing technology.
The organisers of the renowned "Knitting Tech'' series exhibition are partners in this fair bringing in global leaders for the knitting section. Similarly, in the fabrics and accessories section, ties-ups with "IPFonline'', the publishers of "The Indian Textile Journal'' and "Fabric Resource Guide'' has strengthened participation for the fabrics and accessories hall. Besides, "Apparel Online'' is the official trade fortnightly helping in promotion of the event in industry circles.
Key players in the Indian apparel market feel that because of its high quality products and cheap and trained labour force, China has been successful in capturing a chunk of the global apparel market. Emphasising the need for India to follow the same success model, organisers feel this exhibition would greatly help the Indian industry managers to learn a lot about developments going on around the world in the garment sector and emulate them for betterment of Indian industry.
