Nature's way

WHILE ITS counterparts elsewhere have met with a premature end, felled by the executioner's axe, this tree seems to be well past its autumn, with no spring to look forward to.

Trees leave their own imprint on the city, in an invisible way — they improve the quality of air that people breathe. Yet, they get little support from policymakers.

Air-conditioner makers promise ``clean filtered air'' but there is no escape for anyone, be it VIP or pauper, from polluted air.

``You can buy clean bottled water, to escape drinking water that is polluted. But you cannot buy clean bottled air,'' point out environmental activists.

Contrast this with `green' inventors in Singapore who want to convert building roofs in the island State into vast vegetable gardens, using spray irrigation.

Their reasoning: it would boost vegetable production and improve air quality!
