Brevity, fun and wit

HERE'S SOMETHING to fire your imagination. Coming up from Masquerade, the performance group will go on stage with `Funny Briefs-Witty Shorts' on July 15-16 at the Music Academy Mini Hall.

``The July 15 show is a special show for The Madras Players Theatre Club members. July 16 is the public premiere. The authors featured include Alan Ayckbourn and David Ives. These are what could be described as comedies with intelligence and laughter without frills,'' S. Krishna Kumar of Masquerade reveals.

``Funny Briefs, Witty Shorts... no pun intended, are short little comedies — four of them in total that just amount to a running time of approximately an hour, aimed at providing an evening of intellectually piquant yet amusing and laughable comic plays to Chennai's theatre audience,'' goes the brief from the organisers.

Three of the David Ives' shorts that will be put up along with Alan Ayckbourn's `Mother Figure', that has proved to be a sure fire cracker of laughs in the city.

`Mother Figure' has Indrani Krishnaier as Ms. Lucy Crompton, Apsara Walia as Rosemary and Atindra Sai as Terry. Geetanjali Sriram and Harsha Subramaniam get on stage for Dr.Fritz by David Ives. `Arabian Nights' features Lokesh Mathur, Vikash Mehrotra and Nikhila Kesavan and `Enigma Variations' has a cast of Krupasagar Sridharan, Kumudam Neelakantan, Harsha Subramaniam, Geetanjali Sriram and Ramanan Siddarth.

The three plays by David Ives — his latest comedies are being performed for the first time in the city, we hear. The show is directed by S. Krishna Kumar and Krupasagan Sridharan.

``The comedies are full of intelligent gags and explore our attempts to successfully communicate in our search for company, companionship, friendship, love and understanding,'' the organisers say.

Tickets (Rs.100 a piece) are available at Landmark, Nungambakkam and at the venue on 16th. For more details, email masquerade@vsnl.net or browse the group's homepage: http://www.masquerade.freeservers.com.
