New guidelines
WITHIN DAYS of taking over, the Madras University's new Vice Chancellor S. Ignacimuthu, has evolved new guidelines for appointment of Deansand Directors of work. So far, without any clear guidelines, the `postings' have been a source of criticism or of whispered gossip.
Deans and campus directors are henceforth to be nominated only by seniority and the posts given only to those who have not occupied the positions earlier. Taking a cue from what's happening elsewhere, the VC has also decided to apply a `one person one post' norm to all. Besides being head of a Department, a person can hold only one additional post like Dean or Director.
By the time the VC made public these decisions, some of the postings had already been made, as per the guidelines.
At his first press conference on Monday, Dr. Ignacimuthu said that one of his tasks would be to modernise the public relations and enquiry office.
Maybe, in the next few months, visitors who come to the university or contact the Public Relations office by phone or fax, will also encounter a good response mechanism.
