On the right track

WALKING TALL: Sharwar Ali on the path of success.

VERY FEW dominate the ramp the way he does. He walks ... er... catwalks, tall, and is a treat to watch. Yeah, standing tall at six feet and few inches more, Shahwar Ali is one figure on the ramp, who invites attention without much of an effort.

Hailing from Bhopal, Shahwar has been making quiet and successful inroads into the glitzy and crowded modelling scene of Mumbai. Whether it is the ramp or product promotion assignments, the lanky youngster is creating waves with his poise, unconventional looks and appealing presence. "Modelling began quite accidentally for me," he remembers.

Acting on suggestions from friends, Shahwar participated in the Graviera Mr. India Contest in 1998, where he won appreciation for `Best Physique'. What began as a casual encounter turned into an obsession for the ramp.

Some encouraging words from Hemant Trivedi and some prodding by Arjun Rampal finally saw the `first model from Bhopal' shifting base to Mumbai.

Two years later, Shahwar is contented at the way ``some luck and lot of efforts'' led him on the path of success. He signed a two-year contract as a showroom model in London for Calvin Klein, apart from bagging some plum assignments such as `Zodiac', `Shopper's Stop' and the television commercial for `Titan Fast Track'.

"I am quite happy with the way things have moved for me in this otherwise tough world of modelling," he admits. Apart from having worked with almost all top designers of the country, Shahwar was also seen in a couple of music videos, but says he will wait for some more time before testing his luck with silver screen. "May be a year or so later," he says, drawing himself to full height.

Shahwar was in city recently for a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) show and the young student-designers cheered him enthusiastically every time he hit the ramp. Who are his favourite models? "Arjun Rampal, Rahul Dev and among females, Fleur Xavier," he says without a second thought.

On his second visit to Hyderabad, Shahwar is clearly floored by the city. "People are really warm here and the place is so charming," he says without forgetting to mention his newfound love here, the `Hyderabadi Biryani'. "Oh, it's so scrumptious and I really savour the dish," he adds.
