Debutant promises a melodious treat

Singer Ricky M.

HE HAS been around for almost 10 years now but strangely enough has never cut an album. Being the "Bhangra King'' Daler Mehndi's nephew, he could have done so long back. Yet Ricky M continued to hone his singing skills all these years before finally coming up with his debut album, "Ankhon Sohni'', this past fortnight.

Produced by R-Music, a Delhi-based music company, the Punjabi cassette is a compilation of eight songs, lyrics for which has been composed by Goldie Dogra, who has been a musician for the past 15 years and who has even had a brief stint in the Mumbai film industry.

According to Ricky M, "Ankhon Sohni'' is a melodious and rhythmic mix of fast and slow beats, dance numbers, sad songs and Punjabi folk. "The album was recorded in digital stereo,'' says the singer, whose ideal and inspiration is the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Sufiana singer of Pakistan.

At the outset, Ricky M declares that he does not want to be compared with his uncle, Daler Mehndi. "I want to be known as a singer in my own right,'' says the Pujabi singer, who asserts that he has his own individuality and a unique style for which he should be known.

Born in Sirhind, Punjab, Ricky began singing at a very young age. His father being a classical singer of the Patiala Gharana was a guru to him since childhood. Ricky's urge to become a full- time musician was so strong that he declined to join his father's business. "It was my father who has given me all the encouragement and guidance and if today I am a professional singer following an individual style, it is all due to him,'' he says with gratitude.

While Ricky claims not to imitate others, he also presents his own stage shows with a group of dancers and musicians. "I began my musical journey with local fairs and festivals in 1992 and to this day, I do not adopt the trend of singing and dancing which many artists have adopted for stage shows,'' he says.

With his first solo album "Ankhon Sohni'', Ricky is now hoping to participate in musical nights. The video of the title song "Ankhon Sohni'' has been done by Himanshu Saini, who has directed ad films in the past, besides being involved in a few feature films. A noteworthy feature of the video is that it features an India-based Russian model, Lada Singh, and has been shot entirely in Delhi.
