Climb ev'ry mountain!

THE WORD `focus' is quite a `convoluted' term. For everything revolves around it! Your work, life, interests, hopes and your aspirations. Everything. It is the single-minded focus and devotion to our work that helps us reach the height of achievement. Yet, there are times when we feel low, out of steam and totally lacking in concentration. Distraction abounds, affecting our work. This happens because of - workplace and domestic problems, monotonous work routines, uninspiring and lacklustre work.

And when focus dims, things just don't get done. Your problems gnaw at you while boredom makes concentration impossible. Getting on top of this and refocusing is something that becomes the need of the instant. Doing this is easy if you:

Change your routine

Keep to tight deadlines and allow no room for distraction

Take frequent breaks to collect your thoughts. Take refreshing breaks: look out of the window or keep a personal journal and take few minutes off to make notes in it.

If it really becomes impossible, take short periodic breaks to gather your thoughts

Reschedule your work to include a lot of physical activity to keep yourself occupied. Physical activity often helps in better concentration.

There are interesting new ways to help you regain your focus -

Hypnotism and NLP - New age therapies, they are known to be effective in helping people deal with problems of concentration. But expert guidance is essential.

Yoga and meditation - These methods have been used since time immemorial and proved very beneficial. They help one deal effectively with problems of concentration, focus and at times encourage the solution to deep-rooted problems.

Stare at a candle or an object fixedly for sometime, gradually increasing the duration to 15 minutes. Done over a period of time, this technique is known to improve your power of concentration.

Talk it out - talking things out is a good thing to do. It not only gets the angst out of the system, it helps you concentrate on your job, and puts things in perspective.

A prolonged case of being unable to concentrate could even indicate a medical condition. ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder is often a less-known condition that can be medically treated.

Problems are a part of one's work and life. If not addressed immediately, they can grow exponentially or become chronic conditions that obstruct productivity. Take care to see that you create no mountains out of your molehills!
