POETRY IN MOTION: Navia Natarajan.
Navia Natarajan, a young dancer from the United States, enthralled the audience with her Bharathanatyam recital, organised by Thalam Cultural Trust in Thrissur.
Navia began her recital with a Ganesha stuti in Saurashtra raga and she showed her mettle in the rigorous Anandabhairavi varnam. Combining nimble footwork with eloquent bhava, she eloquently conveyed the Shringara Rasa.
In this composition, the Nayika coaxes her friend to go and bring her lover to her, the divine Rajagopala of Mannarkudi. The refreshing Kannada Devar Nama is a padam set to Sankarabharanam. It portrays a doting Yasodha telling her little one not to go outdoors as she fears that His devotees may take Him away from her.
Navia expressed the Vatsalya Rasa by interspersing the classical expressions with colloquial idioms. The Devi stuti in Kamalamanohari raga with its sombre devotional mood was a sharp contrast. The Thillana in Revathi raga brought this scintillating performance to its end.
Shunning all gimmicks Navia's recital upheld the tradition in theme, form and style. Her margam contained variety but there was an underlying bedrock of tradition. The moods too varied from devotion to amorousness to motherly love.
Navia lived her portrayal of the devotee, the lovelorn Nayika and the doting mother.
The dance and the dancer formed one composite, joyful unity.
A scientist by profession, Navia with her talent and ability to interpret and improvise is sure to go places.
