Rabies diagnostic facility set up

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM June 12. The Animal Husbandry Department has set up a rabies diagnostic laboratory at the Chief Disease Investigation Office at Palode, near here.

Equipped with the Flourescent Antibody Technique, the laboratory uses imported microscope and other sophisticated equipment for post mortem analysis of brain samples. The new facility is expected to help assess the extent of the threat posed by rabies in many areas of the city.

Recently, a suspected outbreak of rabies in cows in some parts of the city had sparked off panic among residents. Veterinary experts were left groping in the dark in the absence of diagnostic facilities for confirmation.

A press note issued by the Animal Husbandry Directorate said the laboratory would be inaugurated on June 16 by the Minister for Animal Husbandry, K.R. Gouri. The Minister will also release a new duck disease vaccine and a reagent for udder disease diagnosis developed by the Veterinary Biologicals, Palode. A seminar on disease prevention would be organised in connection with the event.
