The work, which began at 12 noon yesterday, was completed by 5.59 a.m. this morning with L& T engineers installing the idol on a peetam (base), which has a concrete foundation. The idol was to have been installed on June 11 between 10.30 am and 12 noon. But till then, only the `yanthram' had been installed. Using imported hydraulic jacks and four towers, which weighed 110 tonnes, the idol was lifted off the trailer, which brought it from Kelambakkam near Chennai. It took about two years to carve the idol from a single piece of stone. The image, which was in a lying position, had to be first moved from the trailer, lifted and then installed on the peetam. "The idol had to be moved inch by inch to ensure that no damage was caused to it while moving or installing it. All of us stayed awake the whole night watching the men work," says B. A. Kodandarama Setty, Chairman, Yanthra Prathistha Committee and trustee, Panchamukah Sri Jaya Maruthi Seva Trust.
