Out of the targeted extent under Telugu Ganga, 16,000 hectares will be in Nellore district through Kandaleru-Poondi (KP) Canal going to Chennai, 10,000 hectares in Kurnool to be served by the Velugodu Reservoir, 8,000 hectares in Cuddapah and 6,000 hectares in Chittoor district by a linkage of KP <243>Canal. The maximum area covered by Telugu Ganga so far is only 16,000 hectares, all in Kurnool district. According to the Irrigation Secretary looking after these projects, K. Raju, Chennai will get its share from June as per the working-table depending on the availability in the Srisailam-Somasila-Kandaleru system. He said 80 per cent of lining work of the KP Canal was over. The storage capacity of Somasila project is being increased to stabilise existing ayacut and create additional areas by immediate acquisition of lands in Cuddapah district coming under the submergence of the Pennar. Revenue officials have been designated to expedite the process through Lokadalat system or by `prior consent' of the prospective displaced families. Compensation to a tune of Rs. 60 to 70 crores will be paid in a transparent manner.
