Letters to the Editor
Sir, The BJP-led Government and the Sonia-led Opposition should desist from sending our troops to Iraq to serve under the Pentagon's command. We should strongly oppose any such move and deplore it, as this would be tantamount to an abject surrender of our national sovereignty to the United States. The Iraqi people would not welcome Indian troops on their soil. India should not become a tool in the hands of the U.S. President, George W. Bush, under any circumstances. This is the wish of the vast majority of Indians. G. David Milton, Kanyakumari, T.N. * * * Sir, You have expressed the sentiments of the average Indian on the issue of sending the Indian troops to Iraq, through your editorial, "Treading with caution" ( June 12 ). While the United Nations-led peace keeping forces have suffered setbacks elsewhere, the present U. S. request should be processed with caution and political consensus. The assertion of the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, that there would be no hurried decision is a welcome sign. Of course, Iraq needs humanitarian and other help at this juncture. But the overall situation warrants a highly cautious and judicious approach. C.P. Velayudhan Nair, Kochi, Kerala
