This Day That Age
Inaugurating a British Council Refresher Course for English teachers, Mr. Sri Prakasa, Governor of Madras, observed. ``The English language is well-known as an international cultural, commercial and political language. In India, through English, we realized we are one people, and fought our great struggle for freedom. English will serve to unify the country. The British Council, established about 20 years ago, is a world-wide organization with laudable objects. The Council wants to bring the British people through the medium of their vital, vigorous, and beautiful language, into touch with the different parts of the world. It is a great ideal. Even India's freedom movement had been morally supported by many English people. That was entirely because many Indians of the past generation had the great advantage of learning the English language with great care, and coming into close social contact with the English people. ." Fifty men and women teachers from the Nilgiris, Malabar and Coimbatore districts had come for the course. Mr. S.C.G. Bach, Regional Representative, British Council, Madras, thanked the Director of Public Instruction, for his cooperation, and the National Y.M.C.A. for sparing Anandagiri in Ooty for the 12-day event.
