Fire kills 14 pilgrims in Mecca

DUBAI MAY 16. A fire in Mecca in Saudi Arabia has killed 14 persons and injured 43, the official Saudi Press Agency reported today. The fire broke out on Thursday in a building housing 270 pilgrims.

The agency quoted the director of civil defence, Mecca region, Brigadier Ahmed bin Saad Al Thubaiti, as saying that the fire was brought under control by members of the civil defence force. "Billowing smoke led to the death of 14 and the suffocation of 43 others," Mr. Thubaiti said adding that, "preliminary investigation showed that the fire was accidental". — DPA
