Simhadri power units trip again

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM MAY 10. Power supply in three north coastal Andhra districts got cut off completely for three hours this morning following tripping of NTPC Simhadri power generators in Parawada affecting industrial production and movement of trains.

The supply, which got cut off at 3.41 a.m. was restored in phases from 6.30 a.m. to 9 a.m., but a 50 MW load shedding was being taken in Visakhapatnam district on Saturday as the generation in the NTPC Simhadri was slowly picking up. This load shedding will be a permanent feature from today with the EPDCL asked to take a daily load shedding of 20 MW. Some urban pockets, which enjoyed 24-hour power supply could face power shutdown during daytime and the rural areas could face longer power cuts during nights also. The power cut schedule is being worked out for the entire north coastal Andhra districts.

While the root cause for tripping of NTPC generators on Saturday is being enquired into, the Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited of A.P. said that snapping of earth wire in the 440 kv/220 kv sub-station of NTPC had got cut due to salt deposits. Whether tripping of generator led to transmission life fault or vice-versa is yet to be ascertained.

Similar deposit of salt on conductors had led to tripping of power twice earlier and the deposits were removed and conductors replaced on 440 kv lines, but this time the problem erupted on the 220 kv lines.

The EPDCL SE, V. Gandhi Babu, said the three districts were cut off from the State Grid and even affecting the Spectrum Power, Kakinada. Power was temporarily taken from the Peddapuram feeder and restored for the Railways first.

All trains reaching and leaving Visakhapatnam got delayed between one hour and one and a half hours, the railway authorities said. Diesel generating sets were used for pumping water on the platform.

The work in Hindustan Shipyard Limited was affected for some time.
