YSR alleges diversion of Sagar water to sugar unit

By Our Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM May 10. The CLP leader, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said on Saturday that the Government owed an explanation to people on the special consideration being given to Kakatiya Sugars near Kallur in giving the Nagarjunasagar left canal waters for its industrial use.

Addressing a news conference here, he said the special privilege enjoyed by the sugar unit owed to the clout of the management in the ruling party circles.

He said the Chief Minister's family was believed to have its representation on the board of directors of Kakatiya Sugars. The Chief Minister should clarify whether the sugar factory and the special treatment given to it had anything to do with his family. He said women in the nearby villages complained that the authorities were meeting the water requirement of the factory on priority while leaving people in the vicinity high and dry.

The Congress leader alleged that the Food-for-work programme had lost its sanctity as it did not benefit the genuine people in the villages. The rice issued for the implementation of the FFW programme was being diverted to market for recycling in a systematic manner. He said the irregularities in the implementation of the programme needed to be taken seriously.

He wanted the Government to respond to the situation positively and depute a high-level team or Ministers concerned to study the implementation of the scheme and its shortcomings. He said the Congress was ready to prove the irregularities during the padayatra if the Ministers were sincere to the cause.

He said migrations were on the increase from drought-affected areas as the Government was failing to extend adequate help. ITDAs were also falling short of the expectations of people. The plight of tribals in the drought-affected areas was much worse.

The PCC general secretary, P. Sudhakar Reddy, said the padayatra had proved the dedication of the Congess leadership to the service of the common man. The party leader, Gali Muddu Krishnama Naidu, called on Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy in the day.
