Remarks were casual, says Fernandes

New Delhi April 14. Downplaying the recent statements on pre-emptive strikes against Pakistan on the Iraq pattern, the Defence Minister, George Fernandes, today said the remarks were "casual" and not a government policy.

He was referring to the statements by the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, and supported by him last week that the conditions for which Iraq was attacked by the U.S.-led coalition existed in Pakistan also. "But that was a casual statement and not any policy decision of the Government or a considered view of some section," he told `NDTV 24X7' channel.

He clarified that Mr. Sinha, while making the statement, did not suggest that the U.S. or any other country should take action against Pakistan.

Mr. Sinha "did not demand a pre-emptive strike" against Pakistan while making the statement, Mr. Fernandes said. — PTI
