Move court to bail out arrested leaders, says Karunanidhi

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI April 14. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today asked party lawyers to move court for bail to secure the release of its leaders and cadres, including M.K. Stalin and other MLAs arrested and lodged in jails in the State.

In a statement today, Mr. Karunanidhi said Mr. Stalin and the party legislators K. Ponmudi, Hussain, A.V. Velu, L. Pugazhendhi and J. Anbazhagan were arrested on trumped up charges, after they visited the agitating students of Queen Mary's College on April 8. A day later when they were lodged in the Cuddalore jail, new provisions including `Attempt to murder' had been added to the charges. Mr. Karunanidhi said that presspersons had then sought to know from him whether the party would seek bail for the arrested persons. He had then replied that "suitable legal action would be taken based on the cases".

The statement said the party advocates have now been asked to move the courts in the different districts to secure the release (on bail) of the MLAs and other party workers, lodged in jails throughout the State.
