Speaking as the chief guest at the 48th Railway week and 150 years celebrations of Indian Railways at a function organised at the Railway community centre here today, Mr. Bakht recalled the contribution of the Indian Railways in various spheres. At the function, the Governor also felicitated G. Bhaskaran, Retired Station Master, Changanacherry, who is the oldest living railway employee in the trivandrum railway division, on the occasion of 150 years of Indian Railways. The 81-year-old Bhaskaran, who joined the railways as a relieving clerk in 1947 at Mettupalayam, worked in difficult stations and locations in Tamil Nadu before retiring as the Station Master, Changanacherry after 32 years of service. A national freedom fighter drawing pension from the State, Mr. Bhaskaran had worked in the Royal Indian Navy for four-and-a- half years as sailor during the World War II. He had also got the accident free award for outstanding performance on safety front. The Divisional Railway Manager, K. K. Srivastava, who spoke on the occasion, pointed out the achievements of the railway division. He also presented 364 individual awards and 18 group awards to the employees of the railway division. The railway week is being observed by the division to mark the first run of the train in the country over as stretch of 34 kms from Mumbai to Thane on April 16,1853. The former Railway Board Chairman, M. N. Prasad, the Additional Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj, the representatives of the railway employees unions T. U. Varghese and C. S. Prasanna Kumar were among those who spoke. At the railway week celebrations held in the Southern Railway headquarters in Chennai on April 11, the railway division was presented the General Manager's safety shield for the best safety performance for last year.
