DYFI State meet begins in Kollam on April 26

KOLLAM APRIL 14. The retired Admiral of the Indian Navy, Vishnu Bhagawat, will inaugurate the three-day ninth State conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) here on April 26.

At a press conference here today the DYFI State president, P. R. Vasanthan, and secretary, T. Sasidharan, said the CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, the DYFI national president, N. N. Krishnadas, MP, and the national secretary, Thapas Sinha, would address the inaugural function.

Mr. Sasidharan said the conference would discuss in detail and evolve ways to intensify a mass movement against the imperialist forces. A campaign against Coco Cola and Hindustan lever Limited would also be intensified. He said the DYFI would include in its agenda the concept of promoting `swadeshi' products.

He said the DYFI would also launch a major campaign against the "human Gods" and superstitions. As part of the State conference, the DYFI would also organise 100 village-level meetings aimed at creating awareness against casteism. Mr. Vasanthan said that was the first time that the DYFI State conference was being held at Kollam.

The conference would analyse the various aspects of DYFI activities since the last State conference at Kanjangad in 2000. The flag for the conference would be brought from Koothuparamba and the mast from Alappuzha. The conference torch would be brought from the tomb of the slain DYFI leader, Ashraf, at Thadikkad in Anchal.

The conference reception committee chairman and CPI(M) district committee secretary, K. Rajagopal, said fourteen different seminars had been organised in different parts of the district in connection with the conference.

These would include one on `Globalisation and Kerala's agricultural economy' to be inaugurated by the CPI(M) Politburo member, S. Ramachandran Pillai, at Pathanapuram on April 19.

The other seminars include one on `Industrialisation of Kerala'' to be inaugurated by the Tourism Minister, K. V. Thomas, at Karunagapally on April 20, one on `Media Politics' to be inaugurated by the former Chief Minister, E. K. Nayanar, at Perumbuzha on April 21, `Women and society' to be inaugurated by Justice D. Sreedevi at Kadakkal on April 23 and `Contemporary challenges faced by Kerala' to be inaugurated by the KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan, at the Press Club Maidan here on April 26.
