ISLAMABAD APRIL 14. The parliamentary leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, said army generals were responsible for the Kargil "fiasco" but the price was paid by the then Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif. At a function presided by the PML-Q vice-president, Abdul Majid, Mr. Hashmi said after the clashes with the Indian Army in Kargil, the three services chiefs sought an emergency meeting with Mr. Sharif at the Governor's House, Lahore. At the meeting, they admitted that they had committed a "misadventure" in Kargil and requested him to take steps to save them from the impending embarrassment even if it meant visiting the United States. As a result, the Washington visit of the Prime Minister was finalised. And on his return, Gen. Musharraf called on him and saluted him for achieving a ceasefire, Mr. Hashmi added. The present regime had agreed to share command and control system of Pakistan's nuclear technology with the U.S. This would gravely hurt the country's interest and the army's prestige. The partyless Assembly of 1985 had defied the then military ruler for 38 days forcing him to agree to a number of amendments in the constitutional package, whereas the majority in a party-based Assembly now was supporting Gen. Musharraf, Mr. Hashmi said.
