45 films to be shown at French animation festival

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD April 14. The French Animation Film festival couldn't have come to the City a day earlier. With most of the children already on vacation, they can look forward to good viewing time. The five-day festival commenced on Monday to showcase the richness of animated cinema through its creativity. The best of French production in animation during the last decade will be screened at the Sarathi Studios, Ameerpet.

In all, 45 short films under various themes such as "Whodunits" and "Chases," "Taking Flight," "The Menagerie," "Modern Tales" and "Familiar and Unsual Worlds" will be on show. The animation films tell stories using graphic design, clay modelling, puppets, pastel under camera, scratching on film and even computer-generated images.

Dominique Girad, Ambassador of France in India, who inaugurated the film festival at the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University on Monday, said animation would become an important domain of cooperation between India and France. For both sides animation represented economic and cultural challenges in the context of globalisation. Cinema and images were among the best media to reveal and understand one's culture, Mr. Girad said.

The film festival was the last cultural event of the French Season in India. There was no genre in film making which was left aside when it came to story telling. Animation was not meant just for children but for the entire family and even grown-ups, Mr. Girad said.

He said more than 800 hours of French animation would be on television screens in the coming months. Currently, about 100 hours of animation is being produced between Indian and French companies. One of them, Dataquest, of Hyderabad, already has a tie-up with France.

Former Minister, Basheeruddin Babu Khan, urged the children to spread the word about the film festival. Venkat Akkineni, managing director, Heart Entertainment Ltd, Ved Kumar, president, Children's Film Society, also spoke. The programme was followed by screening of 11 films under the category "Menagerie.''
