Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
An MLA held aloft a one-litre plastic bottle that contained not mineral water but murky water that was being passed off as `drinking water.' That was the unspoken complaint of Yakutpura MLA, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan. These were scenes that greeted the Mayor, Teegala Krishna Reddy, the Tourism Minister, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, and the Deputy Mayor, Subhash Chanderji, when they went on an inspection of the water supply position in the Malakpet and Yakutpura Assembly constituencies on Thursday. They heard complaints from women near the fish market in Saidabad that people in the entire area were suffering from either low pressure or contaminated water. When the Minister and the Mayor sought an explanation from Metrowater Board officials, they could only mumble excuses. Mr. Yadav and Mr. Krishna Reddy gave the officials four days' time to rectify the problems. Another common complaint was that officials were not taking action on some residents for using electric pumps to draw drinking water. On the initiative taken by Mr. Chanderji, residents pooled together Rs. 1 crore as their share for a water/sewerage project. But despite their share being 20 per cent more than the mandatory people's contribution under Janmabhoomi, the project had not seen the light of the day with the Government share not forthcoming. The Minister and the Mayor promised to get the `file moving.' The team then moved on through the cramped streets beyond Rein Bazaar police station and Brahmanawadi.
