The employees struck work over a month ago when 1,400 workers were laid off by the JP industries without compensation as alleged by the union. During the strike, the authorities had used strong-arm tactics to sabotage the agitation, the unions alleged. After protests by several human rights organisations, the State Government stepped in. A series of meetings were held over four days at the end of which the JP industries agreed to reinstate all the retrenched workers belonging to Doda. According to the agreement reached, after the reinstatement of 650 workers from Doda, the remaining workers would be paid five times the compensation required to be paid under labour laws. The JP Industries also agreed to pay 75 per cent wages to the workers for the strike period 50 per cent to be paid immediately and the remaining to be paid after two months. The CPI (M) legislator and PDF legislature leader, M. Y. Tarigami, described it as a big achievement.
