dated April 10, 1953: Terms of Secretary-General

On Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld's induction as Secretary-General on the 11th, Mr. Trygve Lie was to enter retirement with an annual pension of $10.000 tax free. Under the unwritten terms of his appointment, the understanding was that he would not take up public office in any country for five years from retirement. Since the Secretary-General gained confidential information from many Governments, the U.N. did not want to risk such information being used to benefit any particular country which employed a retired Secretary-General. Mr. Hammarskjoeld's appointment was for a tenure of five years on a salary of U.S. dollars 55,000 per annum.
