Indian lads lose in first round

NEW DELHI APRIL 9. The Indian lads failed to cross the first hurdle in the singles event of the second $ 15,000 ITF Futures tennis tournament in Doha, Qatar.

The fifth-seeded Mustafa Ghouse lost to the 829th ranked Adrian Barbu of Romania 4-6, 1-6. Jaco Mathew went down to the fourth-seeded Michael Berrer of Germany 6-1, 5-7, 3-6. Punna Vishal lost to the seventh-seeded Ivo Klec of Germany 6-7 (5-7), 4-6.

In doubles, however, the fourth-seeded Mustafa Ghouse and Philipp Marx of Germany beat Mohammed Al Kawary of Qatar and Rishi Behl 6-2, 6-4. Jaco Mathew in partnership with Yew-Ming Si of Malaysia also made the quarterfinals, beating Nasser Al Kaelaifi of Qatar and Abdul Malik Cassien of South Africa 6-0, 6-2.

Punna Vishal and Takeshi Itoh of Japan lost 1-6, 2-6 to Jonathan Marray and David Sherwood of Britain.

The Indian players had a better fare last week in the first 15,000 dollar tournament. The best was Jaco Mathew's semifinal entry in doubles with Yew-Ming Si.

The Indo-Malaysian pair lost to the second-seeded Jonathan Marray and David Sherwood 3-6, 2-6, after beating the fourt-seeded Hiroki Kondo of Japan and Mustafa Ghouse 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Mohammed Al Ghareeb of Kuwait and Baptiste Dupuy of France 6-4, 7-5 in the first two rounds in that order.

Punna Vishal and Philipp Marx of Germany had lost to Michael Berrer of Germany and Adam Chadaj of Poland 3-6, 3-6 in the first round then.

In singles, Punna Vishal made the main draw as a lucky-loser and beat qualifier Rishi Behl 7-5, 6-0 in the first round. He lost 1-6, 2-6 to the top-seeded Rogier Wassen of the Netherlands in the pre-quarterfinals.

The sixth-seeded Mustafa Ghouse beat Musaad Al Jazzaf of Kuwait 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 before going down 3-6, 2-6 to Toshihide Matsui of Japan in the second round.

Jaco Mathew came through the qualifying event, and beat his doubles partner and qualifier Yew-Ming Si 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). He then lost to wild card entrant Omar Bahrouzyan of the UAE 3-6, 4-6.
