Mr. Gopalakrishnan, while sending his entry to the jury, had made it specifically clear that `Nizhalkuthu' need not be considered for awards in the categories of direction and script. The debutant director, Sathish Menon's `Bhavum' was adjudged the best film of the year. Satish, a Keralite settled in the U.S., is also the producer of this film. The second best film is `Sthithi' directed by Sharath. Its producer is T. P. Abdul Khader. However, the jury headed by the veteran film-maker, K. G. George, was of the opinion that there was none meriting the award for the best director nor for the best script writer. The best actor award has gone to Oduvil Unnikrishnan for his role of a hangman he essayed in `Nizhalkuthu'. Jagathy Sreekumar is the second best actor for his roles in `Nizhalkuthu' and `Meesa Madhavan'. Navya Nair, the lead character in `Nandanam', was adjudged the best actress. The runner-up in this category is Jyothirmayi for her performance in `Bhavum'. The best child actor is Pranav Mohanlal, son of Mohanlal, for the film `Punarjani'.
