Born in 1946, the new DGP hails from Thrissur in Kerala. He was appointed to the IPS in July 1969. He held the posts of Deputy Director, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption; DIG of Madurai range and Inspector-General, Vigilance, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. He was on deputation to the Government of India from 1973 to 1984 and again from 1989 to 1997.
Speculation ends
The appointment of the new DGP, on the scheduled date of retirement of Dr. Rajagopalan ended speculation, including in police circles, that he might get an extension. Talking to newspersons after taking over, Mr. Govind stressed the need for public cooperation to the police in maintenance of law and order and crime prevention. The Tamil Nadu police would continue to be "humane, responsive and people-friendly". Dr. Rajagopalan said he was extremely happy to retire after nearly four decades of service. He had one of the longest tenures as Chennai Commissioner. "Nothing gives me greater happiness when the Government has tremendous confidence in good officers. That itself will be a reward." The Government was prepared to do anything for the force. The mobility of personnel had increased, and it had made available sophisticated gadgets to the police and taken steps for modernising the force, said Dr. Rajagopalan.
