Life term upheld in Leelavathi case

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI MARCH 31. The Madras High Court today confirmed the life sentence awarded to all six accused in the Madurai CPI(M) Councillor Leelavathi murder case. She was murdered on April 23 1997 in Madurai, shortly after she was elected councillor.

After the civic election in March 1997, the Councillor made arrangements for drinking water supply in the Villapuram area, gaining popularity as well as enmity from a gang owing affiliation to one of her poll rivals.

According to the prosecution, Valli (DMK), wife of the first accused and sister of the third accused, lost the election to Leelavathi. After the CPI(M) candidate was declared elected despite objection from Valli's supporters, a group came to her house and threatened her with dire consequences.

On April 23, Leelavathi was hacked to death in broad daylight in the Villapuram bazaar area. The prosecution arraigned Karumalayan, Muthuramalingam, Murugan, Nallamarudhu, Songan and Meenakshisundaram.

Relying on clinching evidence and witness accounts, A.R. Ramalingam, then II Additional Sessions judge, convicted all the six accused and sentenced them to undergo imprisonment for life, on February 8, 2000.

Today, a Division Bench comprising Justice N. Dhinakar and Justice R. Balasubramnian concluded that the crime had been proved beyond reasonable doubt.
