Karnataka-Bangalore
By Our Special Correspondent
Mentioning the decision taken on Sunday at the special meeting of the State executive committee of the party, the State unit President, Basavaraj Patil Sedam, told presspersons here today that the nature of the agitation to be started would be discussed at the interactive meeting. Mr. Sedam said there would be a convention of party workers at all taluk headquarters on April 6, the foundation day of the party, to highlight the achievements of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance Government. There would be a youth convention in Bangalore the same day with the party President, M.Venkaiah Naidu, as the chief guest. Another decision taken at the meeting was to send a contingent of 10,000 party workers to participate in the `Delhi chalo' programme on May 25. Mr. Sedam said accounts received so far indicated that about 4.5 lakh new members had been enrolled in the party. This was 2.5 times higher than last time. The figure might go up to five lakh in the remaining period of the membership drive, he said. The time for enrolment of active members had been extended up to this month, and after this the organisational elections would start. The election of the new president of the State unit of the party would be completed before the end of September, he said. Mr. Sedam ascribed the Congress win in the Humnabad byelection to the Assembly to "abuse of official machinery and adoption of corrupt means" by the ruling party. He said such a victory was needed for it to act as some sort of a relief after its debacle on several fronts and repeated reprimands by the Supreme Court. This, however, could not cover up its failures, he said. The executive committee adopted a resolution which noted the failure of the State Government to tackle the drought situation despite the maximum cooperation and assistance from the Centre and condemned the former still blaming the Centre to mislead the people. The resolution also criticised the Government for failing to fulfil its assurance on uninterrupted power supply to consumers. It regretted the "moral degradation" of the Government which had announced that the proceeds from online lottery scheme would be used for the midday meal programme. The meeting also said that the recent exposure of scams relating to purchase of medicines and fake stamp papers indicated the degree of corruption. The State Government was also accused of surrendering to the lobby of private professional college managements as was clear from its failure to solve the problem of students seeking admission to professional courses. The Government was blamed for creating confusion in the minds of the people on issues such as the self-assessment scheme for property tax and VAT.
