Bills passed sans debate

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE March 31. The Legislative Assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes over the Common Entrance Test (CET) issue, and five Bills were passed without any discussion.

The Bills were the Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions, and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2002, the Karnataka Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill, 2002, the Karnataka Municipalities (Third Amendment) Bill, 2002, the Karnataka Command Areas Development (Amendment) Bill, 2003, and the Karnataka Village Offices Abolition (Amendment) Bill, 2003.

The Bills were passed during the post-lunch session when the entire Opposition continued its dharna in the well of the House demanding that the Government announce its stand on the CET issue.

While the Opposition demanded that the Government make its stand clear today itself as it was the last day of the Budget session, the Government said its stand would be known only after the meeting of the Cabinet on Tuesday.

At one point, the Opposition even demanded the adjournment of the House till Tuesday which was welcomed by the Speaker, M.V.Venkatappa. But the Government was not ready to oblige the Opposition.
