HC order on abkari licence for women

By Our Staff Reporter

Kochi March 31. The Kerala High Court on Monday directed the Excise Commissioner to note down in the licence for abkari shops for women that the issue of licence is subject to further orders of the court.

Justice C. N. Ramachandran Nair issued the directive on a petition filed by the Meenchil Chethuthozhilali Union affiliated to the AITUC. The court said that abkari licences were issued to a large number of women. But it was a well-known fact that these women were really not engaged in the business and used as shields to claim protection whenever necessary.

The court also directed the Excise Commissioner to file a statement on all aspects relating to the issue of licence to women.
